RUN FOR BAYANIHAN RELIEF FOR FLOOD VICTIMS IN THE PHILIPPINES

NAFCON Northern California
“RUN FOR BAYANIHAN RELIEF FOR FLOOD VICTIMS IN THE PHILIPPINES” Half Marathon
Greetings to everyone,
My name is Ryan Leano, Regional Staff Member of the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns-Northern California Region (NAFCON NorCal). As a broad national alliance, NAFCON serves to advance and defend the rights and welfare of Filipinos in the US. Our various campaigns aim to protect migrant Filipinos in the US from criminalization and deportation resulting from a dehumanizing immigration system that treats migrants as labor commodities, as well as defending rights as workers in various industries in which Filipinos are a significant workforce population, such as nurses, hotel workers, caregivers, and domestic workers. Currently NAFCON NorCal has taken a leading role in ensuring the California Domestic Workers Bill of Rights.
While working for the rights and welfare of Filipinos in the US, we also do not forget our people in the Philippines. Bayanihan Disaster Relief is part of NAFCON’s general program of action as an ongoing means of helping our Kababayans back in the Philippines in regards to natural disasters. The Philippines is the most disaster-prone region in Asia in regards to typhoons, earthquakes, and tsunamis. Bayanihan Disaster Relief was first launched in the immediate aftermath of Typhoon Ondoy in 2009, whose path of destruction left 747 people dead and hundreds of thousands more homeless. This relief effort was successful in sending 750 boxes of in-kind donations as well as $95,000 in monetary donations to the communities hardest hit by the typhoon. This was an international joint effort with Migrante International, a grassroots alliance in the Philippines that addresses the needs of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW’s) and their families in the Philippines. Through their relief operation Sagip Migrante, Migrante was able to distribute these donations.
In 2011, Typhoons Pedring and Quiel have also caused much flooding and damage in the areas of Metro Manila and the provinces of Albay, Aurora, and Isabela. Again, NAFCON worked with Migrante International to help in their relief operation. The primary focus of Bayanihan Disaster Relief in 2011 was gathering monetary donations. This ensured the fastest way of getting aid to the Philippines. Again in August 2012, extremely-heavy rainfall battered Manila and the northern Philippines, wreaking havoc much like Typhoon Ondoy. The death toll from the flooding has already risen to 51, and 850,000 have been displaced from their homes. Although the rains have receded, many more storms are still expected to worsen the situation.
NAFCON calls on our families and friends to once again lend our love, prayers and monetary support to flood-affected communities by activating its Bayanihan Relief for Flood Victims in the Philippines. NAFCON is collecting exclusively monetary relief (not material goods) and ensures that your donations go quickly and directly to the communities of the Philippines who are adversely affected. Donations will again be coursed through Migrante International.
In order to fundraise, I have pledged myself to participate in the San Jose Rock-N-Roll Half Marathon on October 7, 2012, in which all donations received from this run will go to NAFCON’s Bayanihan Relief for Flood Victims in the Philippines. Your pledge of support is not only going to fuel me as I run, it is going towards a positive effort in helping our members of the Filipino community in a time when we need it most. Checks can be made payable to “Tulong Sa Bayan” and send to Filipino Community Center, ℅ Ryan Leano, 4681 Mission St., San Francisco, CA 94112. On memo please write: NAFCON Bayanihan Relief and your city of residence. Donations of $250 or more will be tax deductible. Please include return address with donations.
I appreciate any amount you can offer. Will you be part of the team in helping us reach my goal of $1,000?
Maraming salamat sa iyong lahat! (Thank you to all!)
